GeologyEcologyPhysiology

The study of trace fossils - tracks, trails, burrows, borings - as a distinct body of evidence about ancient behaviour. It supports inferences bone cannot: stride length and hip height together give a trackmaker's speed, trackway spacing gives stance width and centre of gravity, and footfall order gives gait coordination, including for a six-limbed body. Trace assemblages also indicate water depth and how firm the substrate was.
