Pandora is richer than the early Earth in everything an origin of life is supposed to need — heat, hydrogen, sulfur, time. The hardest step was exactly as hard anyway, because it is not a shortage but a circular dependency.

Na'vi and human can be spliced into one living body — which means that, at the deepest level, two worlds' life is built from the same stuff: carbon, water, a double helix. Astrobiology asks how much of life is forced by chemistry, and how much is just a frozen accident.

Grace Augustine lifts a handful of Pandoran roots and says the whole forest is wired together by more links than there are synapses in a human brain. The question is not "is it real?" but "what is doing the wiring?" — and the answer lies under our own feet, in a fungal web 400 million years old.

The Forest as a Cathedral
Stand at the foot of a Hometree more than three hundred metres tall, watch the light fall in shafts through the vaulted roof of leaves, and the forest stops being one habitat. It becomes a stack of habitats piled on top of each other by height. The question is not how beautiful the forest is, but how a tree climbs that high at all — and how many floors of life crowd between the base and the crown.

When the light goes out on Pandora, the forest does not sleep — it changes shift. The question is not which animals are active at night, but who told them what time it is — and the answer is a clock built into every cell, wound by the turning of this particular moon.
