Biostratigraphy
Using the succession of fossil assemblages in sedimentary rock to correlate and date strata across widely separated places. Its foundation is the principle of faunal succession: assemblages follow one another in a definite, irreversible order, so two beds on two continents containing the same index species are the same age. Notably, modern geological period boundaries are defined by *biological turnover*, not by rock type.
